Elections in Sri Lanka to be held according to schedule – Minister Maithripala Srisena

Colombo, 08 June, ( Elections in Sri Lanka will be held according to the schedule. There is no need to advance the date of any elections.

Minister Mithripala Srisena , General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party speaking to Asian Tribune said that there is no need for the Government to change the schedules of the elections in the country.

He said that the elections for almost all the seven Provincial Councils will be held in 2009, according to the schedule.

Furthermore, there will not be any change in the date of the Parliamentary general elections, he emphasized. Maithripala Srisena who is also Minister of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services said that the Parliamentary general elections will be held in 2010 as scheduled.

When asked whether the Government would have enough support to continue running the government till 2010, he said, “We have enough support to run the Government. Therefore there is no emergency or crisis expected for the Government to dissolve the parliament, to rush for any snap elections.”

Minister said at present the government and the country is confronted with the scourge of terrorism. LTTE terrorists are attacking the innocent civilians. This shows the desperation of Prabakaran and his cadres. We will overcome them soon,” the Minister said with confidence.

The Government led by Mahinda Rajapakse has already liberated the East and as a post conflict democratic measure, the people in the East has expressed their freewill in the elections for the East Provincial Council, said Minister Maithripala Srisena. “An administration led by Sivanesathurai Chantirakanthan has already taken over the Eastern Province. The people in the East have started running their own affairs under the Constitution of Sri Lanka,” he said.

Minister Maithripala Srisena pointed out that today Tamils have accepted to be a partner in the Government led by Mahinda Rajapakse.

Government led by Mahinda Rajapakse with the help of the patriotic security forces and the people of this country will free the north on or before the next Parliamentary General elections schedules after April 2010.

Accordingly, the Minister said that the Presidential election is scheduled for 2011. He said that the government would strictly adhere to the preset schedules for the three major elections.
