Toronto 31 July, (Asiantribune.com): Mr. A. Amithalingam, the great Tamil leader and former opposition leader in Sri Lankan parliament, who was brutally murdered by LTTE, was remembered by the Tamil Community in Toronto.
This commemoration meeting was organized by the Canadian Branch of the Tamil United Liberation Front, in Toronto, Canada on 27 July, where all Tamil political parties were in attendance.
Mrs. Rajakulasuriyar lit the lamp and inaugurated the function. Mr. M. Nadarajah of TULF chaired the function.
He elaborated the noble work of late Mr. Amirthalingam and the strong leadership he gave to the Tamil community. He insisted that TULF or its leadership never, ever believed in violence but showed a clear political path under its late leader Mr. Amirthalingam.
He also said Amir Anna not only united the entire North East people, but also united the Muslims and the Indian Tamils as one community. TULF is committed to an amicable solution within the frame work of the Sri Lankan Constitution for the welfare of Tamil community, he said.
Many thought TULF would be no more after Mr. Amirthalingam’s untimely demise, but the sun has risen through the courageous and brave person like Mr. Anandasangaree. In the present political climate and dangerous political situation, I request the Tamil community to come together and support him and follow his political leadership.
Mr. Mahendran also mentioned in his speech that Amir ‘Anna’ was the Great leader of our time and it is unfortunate to have lost him. He said the unbearable difficulty the community suffers now is due to barbaric acts of the LTTE.
Mr. Jeeva read a poem condemning the killing of Mr. Amirthalingam. In conclusion of the meeting Mr. Lenin said the fascist LTTE went to the extent of destroying even the memorial stone which was constructed in honour of the great leader and this shows how wicked and cruel they are.
He also mentioned that the LTTE met Amir ‘Anna’ and had snacks & tea with him, created a situation of trust and later shot him to death. This clearly indicates their cowardness of the LTTE.
It’s a total breach of trust, from which we all have to learn a lesson that is the LTTE cannot be trusted. He continued to say braveness is not to live with cyanide around the neck, pistol in the pocket and surrounded by thousands of heavily armed carders. Braveness is to face the enemy who is equally armed and not the unarmed.
He also said the situation has compelled that no one can do politics in North and East without armed men. He requested the younger generation to denounce the armed struggle and violent means as a tool for political power and to join the main stream politics by way of democratic means to win the hearts of the majority community.
