Lionel Fernando – the new Sri Lanka's Ambassador to France

Colombo, 29 September, ( Lionel Fernando will be the new Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France. He is expected to assume duties shortly.

Fernando has had an outstanding career as Secretary to the Ministry of Media, Tourism and Aviation, Secretary to the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador in the Netherlands, Chairperson Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation & Governor of the North East Province.

He has been also Secretary, Ministry of Civil Defence and Commissioner General of Rehabilitation and Essential Services. He was also the chairman of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW) associated to the UNO.

According to sources in the Foreign Ministry, he is at present going through workshop training in the Ministry prior to taking over the position of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France.

In the meantime, the present Ambassador in France Ms. Chithranganee Wagiswara (from the 1981 Foreign Service batch) is expected to arrive in Colombo by the end of this month after completing her tour of duty.

Also, sources told Asian Tribune that Miss. Jayathiry Samarakoon, appointed as Ambassador to Singapore and Miss Tamara Kumary, Ambassador designate to Cuba are too undergoing workshop training in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to their postings.

Sources said that so far Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not received agrement from Canada regarding the appointment of Daya Perrea, as Sri lanka’s new ambassador.

The former Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Netherlands Pamela J. Deen (1981 Foreign Service batch) who returned to Colombo in the beginning of September, is now posted as Senior Director General East Asia and Pacific.

Ms. Grace Asirvatham who was the Director General- SAARC, has already assumed duties as Ambassador to Netherlands and in her place Aruni Ranarajah who was earlier Director Europe Division has been appointed as Senior Director SAARC.

Furthermore, according to sources in the Foreign Ministry, Neville de Silva, a veteran journalist and the Diplomatic Editor of Asian Tribune has been appointed as the Minister Counselor to Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Thailand.
