On Tuesday the leader of the SLFP Mahajana Wing Mangala Samaraweera speaking at the budget debate in parliament charged that the government has politicised the war and said funds allocated to other sectors have been trimmed due to a large sum of money is being spent on the war.

He emphasised that the ongoing war situation needs a political solution to restore peace in Sri Lanka. He said youths of both sides are losing lives due to the war.

"Regardless of the community, those who die in the North and the South are Sri Lankan youths. However, the children of Rajapaksas and Prabhakaran study abroad," he said.

The government that establishes itself under the pretence of war doesn’t even respect war heroes, Mr. Samaraweera reprimanded.

"A soldier who dies in a battle is only given a compensation of Rs. 150,000, while a politician killed in a terrorist attack is given Rs. 5,000,000, he said.

Responding to Samaraweera’s address Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said Samaraweera’s statement includes false allegations against the government.

During the debate JVP Parliamentarian Lal Kantha reminded the House that it was Mangala Samaraweera who earlier proposed to hand over the north to Prabhakaran to rule for ten years.

He pointed out that Mangala Samaraweera couldn’t understand the difference between ‘nationalism’ and ‘racism’. He also stated that the military operations in the north are being carried out successfully even if Samaraweera wants to stop these operations at this crucial moment it cannot be done.

He alleged that Mangala Samaraweera is appearing on behalf of the United National Party, the TNA and Prabhakaran - all of whom wanted to stop the ongoing military operations.

He pointed out that Mangala Samaraweera along with the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe is strongly against the government’ s war to eliminate terrorism.
