The UN Debunks LTTE Canard of Leaked Documents
United Nations, 19 March, (Asiantribune.com): The LTTE websites are propagating a story of a leaked UN document giving a casualty figure of 2863. The UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson today clarified that the so-called leaked document was an estimation done locally and that it was not a verified and published document.
Responding to a reporter’s question Secretary General’s Spokesperson suggested that it is not possible to verify these estimates given locally and nationally since the UN has no mechanism to count numbers themselves. She emphasized that there were no exact figures.
Although the reporter claimed that it was a document of OCHA (Office of the Coordinator UN for Humanitarian Affairs) the websites published some other document.
There was an ongoing controversy about the civilian casualty figure following a controversial statement by the Geneva based Human Rights High Commissioner Mrs. Navaneetham Pillay.
Figures given by her were hotly contested by the Sri Lanka Government who said that while there may have been casualties it was most likely that the bulk of them was the result of indiscriminate heavy weapons fire from the LTTE who have re-located their remaining heavy guns among the civilians whom they are keeping as a human shield in the 35 sq. km., pocket of Puthukkudirippu.
