Weells Meat Processing to Setup US$ 1 billion processing plant in Pamunugama

Colombo, 04 April, (Asiantribune.com): The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) granted investment approval to Weells Meat Processing (Private) Limited to set up a US $ 1 billion processing plant in Pamunugama. Mr. Dhammika Perera, Chairman/Director General signed the agreement on behalf of the BOI and formally presented the BOI Certificate of Registration to the investor.

A BOI Media Release said : “The Agreement with Weells Meat Processing (Private) Limited is for a project to process fish, meat and fruits for the export market. The project represents an investment of US$ 1,000,000 and is expected to provide 50 new employment opportunities.”

Speaking on the venture, Mr. Dhammika Muthukuda stated that the state-of-the-art processing plant will be located at Nugape, Pamunugama in the Gampaha District. "The product range will include meat, fish and fruits all targeting the export market," stated Muthukuda. “Our meat products include meatballs, sausages, nuggets, ham, bacon and slices among many others. Fish products include frozen fish, fishballs, fish sausages, tuna and whole fish. In addition, we also have fruit products in the form of canned fruits, fruit juices, jam, special cordials and chutneys,” he added.

According to Muthukuda, the Company is primarily targeting the European Union (EU) countries for its products. He added that this is the first phase of the project while the second phase is expected to commence towards the end of 2010. In this phase, the Company will add a Carbonated Bottling Plant and a Noodles Manufacturing Plant.

The Plant will be constructed using German technology and will adhere to high Quality Standards including BRC Certification and ISO 22000.
