Sri Lanka: Plans to light up the entire northern province

Colombo, 31 May, (Asiantribune.com): The Sri Lanka Government is planning to expedite providing electricity to all areas in the northern region of the country.

W. D. J. Seneviratne, Minister of Power and Energy said on Sunday, that they are planning to provide electricity to the entire North under the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" (Spring in the North) program, which was implemented by the government to develop the region.

The Ceylon Electricity Board needs 50 megawatts to provide electricity to the entire north.

The Power and Energy Ministry hopes to get 70 percent of the required electricity from the Chunnakam Coal Power Plant.

Chunnakam power plant is currently producing 15 megawatts, and the Ministry plans to upgrade its production to 35 megawatts, a ministry spokesman said.
