New born in Jaffna not named-'Prabhakaran'

By Our Colombo Correspondent Prasad Gunewardene

Colombo, 08 June, (Asiantribune.com): The name -Name Prabhakaran - the man who brought misery to the Tamils - suddenly discarded by the TamilsName Prabhakaran - the man who brought misery to the Tamils - suddenly discarded by the Tamils'Prabhakaran'- is likely to fade away from the Register of Births in the Jaffna peninsula and other parts of the Northern Province.

According to hospital sources from the peninsula, no male child born after May 18,the day Velupillai Prabhakaran was killed had been given the name Prabhakaran.

In Tamil, language experts say that 'Prabhakaran' is a name without a proper meaning though LTTE supporters attempted to indicate that 'Prabha' was referred to as the 'Sun'. In reality the other part of that name-'Karan'- has no meaning at all, Tamil language experts said.

Hospital sources also indicated that the name Velupillai too had not been used on males born after May 18, the day the LTTE leader was killed.

The LTTE leader carried his father's name as Velupillai in front, a practice by the Tamil community in the usage of the father's name.

The question that haunts the parents psychology in the North may be that they do not want another 'Prabhakaran' from the Tamil community, after Velupillai Prabhakaran caused untold misery to their community.
