Several Sri Lankan Diplomatic Appointments Finalized

Colombo, 04 March, (Asiantribune.com): Names of Daya Perera and Senaka Walagampaya the new appointees as High Commissioners have already been submitted to the Sri Lanka Parliament’s High Post Committee for necessary perusal and approval.

Daya Perera PC is to take over as Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in Ottawa. During the UNP regime Perera served as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. Senaka Walgampaya PC, a SLFP Lawyer is to take over as High Commissioner to Australia.

According to government sources, H.M.G.S. Palihakkara, who was the Former Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will take over as the Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. Sources in the Foreign Ministry said that already Parliament’s High Post Committee has approved Palihakkara name in 2004 April and there is no need for any new clearance for his appointment.

In the meantime Ravinath Ariyasinghe, a career diplomat is the Ambassador designate to Belgium. He is expected to take over in April.

The term of Kshenuka Senewiratne, the present UK High Commissioner expires by the end of March and she is on notice to be replaced by Supreme Court Judge Nihal Jayasinghe who retired on 01 March.

In the meantime Tyronne Fernando, the Ambassador designate for France has passed away the and France Ambassadorship would fall vacant when the incumbent Mrs. Chitranganee Wagiswara term expires by the End of April.

The High Commissioners position in Malaysia remains vacant for the last one year and so far Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not come forward to fill the vacancy. Malaysia is considered one of the key diplomatic outposts in the South East Asia and a full-fledged High Commissioner is seriously felt at present.
