An American style Presidential candidates’ TV debate – a comical circus.

Colombo, 09 November, (Asiantribune.com): For the very first time, an American style TV debate of the leading presidential candidates’ is to take place in Sri Lanka, as the two leading contenders Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and the former Premier Ranil Wickremasinghe have on principle consented to participate in such a debate. According to the Presidential elections rules that debate has to be held on or before 14 November, before the official campaigning period expires.

Earlier Minister Mangala Samaraweera, UPFA campaign manager yesterday urged UNP presidential candidate Ranil Wickremasinghe to fix a date for a presidential debate before the campaigning period is over.

"We hope his acceptance will be promptly responded to by the UNP candidate with an early date since we have very limited time left before the election," he said.

In the meantime, in a letter Ranil Wickremasinghe the Opposition Leader and the UNP Presidential candidate yesterday sent a list of ground rules for the television debate to UPFA Presidential candidate and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

In the letter to the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe wrote: "It gave me great pleasure to learn from the news media that you had made an announcement at a meeting on Sunday 6th November, that you will accept my challenge to a public debate in the run up to the Presidential Election of 17th November.”
