By M Rama Rao - Reporting for Asian Tribune from New Delhi

New Delhi, 09 February, ( In the context of raging cartoon controversy and its fall-out, Amnesty International, AI, message to the media: Act with sensitivity and responsibility so as not to exacerbate the current situation. Apply greater political judgment, taking into account the potential impact of their output and the range of often competing human rights considerations involved.

Its advisory to governments: be guided by human rights principles in their handling of the current situation. Culture and religion are of central importance to many people's lives, but they cannot be used as an excuse to abuse human rights.

AI, which jealously guards the freedoms and free speech across the globe, notwithstanding the charges it faces of bias and collectivisms in its approach, is obviously taken as much by surprise as by anguish over the violent reaction to the stand of the Western media particularly in European countries on the controversial cartoons related to depicting the Prophet.
