Announce the guaranteed price, and the total amount of paddy to be purchased.- demands aggrieved rice farmers

Q Perera - Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 31 October, (Asiantribune.com): Though the government announced that it would purchase paddy at the rate of Rs 16.50 and Rs 15.50 per kilo, depending on the quality, but only Rs 500 million was allocated to purchase a quantity of 1.3 million metric tons of paddy last season, which amounted only a meager fraction of 2.4 percent of the paddy harvested in the country. Therefore the two presidential candidates must publicly declare the amount of money they would allocate to purchase paddy, said Sarath Fernando, President, National Land and Agriculture Project, at a press briefing to announce a joint attempt to salvage the rice farmer from the grips of annihilation.

In this task, the United Federation of Labour led by its President, Linus Jayatilleke, Sarath Fernando, President, National Land and Agriculture Project and Charita Wijeratne, President, Movement for the Production of Indigenous Seed Paddy have jointly appealed to Presidential candidates.

The overall attempts by this group is to save the rice farmer from the grips of a few unscrupulous private traders monopolizing, exploiting and dominating the entire rice market.
