An Appeal to Appoint a Presidential Inquiry Commission Into the Killing of A.Amirthalingham

- Asian Tribune Editorial Board -

Today is the sixteenth death anniversary of Appapillai Amirthalingam. He was killed by cold-blooded gunmen of the LTTE who got into his house in Colombo the pretext of being friendly visitors. Up to now the government has not launched an inquiry into his death.

Amirthalingam was the leader of a democratic Tamil party. In fact he was the leader of the leading Tamil party that worked tirelessly for the Tamils. He was elected by the Tamil people. He was not armed. He was not carrying a gun. He was expressing his politics through his non-violent words and actions. Yet he became a victim of the violent culture that gripped Jaffna Tamil society.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga who has expressed her concern for the oppression of the Tamils and has a duty to inquire into the death of a Tamil democratic leader. These killings have now become a part of the oppression of the Tamil people. Besides, she herself nearly became a victim of this violent culture that came out of Jaffna. In the name of democracy and the right of all the communities to live in peace she has a moral duty as the leader of the state to initiate a Presidential inquiry into the death of the leader of the Tamil party who was also for one time the leader of the opposition.
