<b>23 Tamil Prisoners brought to Colombo Jail</b>

Colombo, August 28: In preparation for Saturday’s Prisoners swap, between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Prison authorities have brought together 23 Tamil prisoners to Colombo’s high security Welikade Prison, prisons authorities said.

28 August 2002 The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) has rapidly shut down its campaign for increased wages among plantation workers in Sri Lanka. The union action, which was limited to a go-slow, began on July 31 and ended on August 7 with none of the wage demands being met. Discussions are still continuing between trade union leaders and the Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) but no pay rise has been agreed to.<

<b>India: Cancel the Genocidal Sethudamudram Ship Canal Project </b>

India should come forward to cancel the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project immediately. If any action is taken to dredge the sea-bed for a canal, it would have adverse effect on Sri Lanka. If any dredging is done on the ocean floor, then within a few years, more than half of the Jaffna Peninsula and nearly 85 small islands on the Western and North-Western coast of Sri Lanka will go under water.
