Opposition Marxists blame government for violence in eastern Sri Lanka

Yahoo News: Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct 13 - The opposition Marxist party on Sunday blamed the government for failing to prevent casualties in a clash last week between police and protesters that killed at least seven people in eastern Sri Lanka.

The Island:Interior Ministry Secretary M. N. Junaid has appointed a three member committee to inquire into the incidents that occurred at Kanjirankudah, Akkaraipattu on October 9.

The Island:The Office of the President was expected to appoint a special committee to inquire into the recent incidents in the north-east subsequent to the cease-fire agreement, political sources said. The committee was also expected to make recommendations on ways and means of avoiding such incidents, the sources said.

The Island:As a general cessation of public activities ordered by the LTTE paralysed government-held regions in the north-east over the weekend subsequent to last week’s incidents in the east, President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday met with the National Security Council (NSC) at Janadhipathi Mandiraya to discuss what she described as a ‘deteriorating’ situation.

The Island:Ven. Elle Gunawansa yesterday urged the government and the Oslo-led Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in the north-east. Refugees’ International Advocate Veronika Martin and human rights lawyer Betsy Apple recently completed an assessment mission to the Thai-Burmese border. There are few fates worse than being an internally displaced person (IDP) in Burma. According to their reports, IDPs inside Burma are divided into two categories: those living under the strict control of the Burmese government in “relocation sites,” and those living in hiding in the jungle from the Burmese army. Both options present a high risk of human rights abuses, a lack of food, and limited or no access to healthcare and education.
