Information gathered from Tamil escapees reveal that there are more than 5000 Tamils languishing in the torture cells run by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. These cells are in the Vanni region in the Northern Province and in the Trincomalee,, Batticaloa, Amaparai districts in the eastern province. According to reports more than 2,000 of prisoners have died in the underground prison warrens located in the Mullaithievu and Sampur in the Trincomalee coastal areas. The worst was when these underground holes were submerged under the tsunami tidal waves that hit these coastal areas on 26 December 2004.Post your comments

The Tamil Tigers have dealt a blow to the peace process by rejecting the Norwegian proposal to hold talks at the Katunayake International Airport – a venue “determined” as neutral by the Norwegian facilitators. The Sri Lankan government yesterday approved the Norwegian proposal but the Tamil Tigers have rejected it. Tamil Tigers earlier insisted on Killinochchi as the venue for talks. Post your comments

Declaring that Sri Lanka’s separatist Tamil Tiger outfit, the LTTE, “is not the sole representative of the Tamil people” and endeavoring to change the mindset of Washington insiders saying that Tamil dissidents who express independent opinions outside the framework laid down by the LTTE are brutally eliminated, Sri Lanka’s Peace Secretariat head Jayantha Dhanapala reminded the international community here that they were so far ineffective in stemming the tide of grave ceasefire violations, insisting on resumption of talks or transforming the LTTE into a democratic institution.
