An Elephantine Crisis

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

Defeat can become a habit, a not uncomfortable habit; a familiar landscape; a normal state of political and psychological existence. This is especially true in the case of self-inflicted defeats. Ever since 1993 the UNP had been heading in this direction and the journey is nearly complete. The Grand Old Party of Lankan politics, under the inimitable leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe (‘The Leader’), has become inured to the idea of Defeat, through repeated self-inflicted defeats. No debacle however humiliating, no disaster however avoidable is alien to this UNP.Post your comments
