Saving the Tiger

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

The decision to postpone Local Government elections in Tamil majority districts of the North and the East is a victory for the LTTE and for the multi-partisan Southern policy of sacrificing the democratic rights of the Tamil people to appease the Tigers. In Geneva, the Rajapakse administration committed itself to the Ranil-Chandrika strategy of avoiding the war by tacitly accepting the Tigers’ overlordship of the Tamils. The election postponement is a logical outcome of this decision by the Lankan state to abdicate its responsibility for the Tamil people of the North and the East in favour of the LTTE. Khaleda Zia's Lackadaisical Visit and the Way Ahead

By Alok Bansal

Begum Khaleda Zia’s farewell trip to India from March 20 to March 22 coming towards the end of her tenure did not create ripples in either New Delhi or Dhaka. The visit by Begum Zia, the first in her four years in power, could have been used to repair a relationship that has gone sour in recent years. It was an opportunity to iron out differences over an entire gamut of issues, including the demarcation of border, militancy and illegal migration, trade and transhipment of natural gas, which continues to cast their shadow over bilateral relations. Dr. V. Ragunathan has shown a genuine interest in learning about the Sri Lankan history. He says that he is keen on re-visiting history to refresh his memory. This is, indeed, a good opportunity to revisit history and re-examine the the stories told to him from a Jaffna perspective. Post your comments
