A cultural and educational program about Sri Lanka is being held at the National Zoo in Washington on 16 and 19 November jointly sponsored by the Sri Lanka embassy, Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Friends of National Zoo. The highlight of the program is the celebration of the fifth birthday of the Sri Lankan baby elephant ‘Kandula.’

The Tamil National Alliance, the proxy party of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will join hands with the National Anti-War Front led by Kumar Rupasinghe to turn the funeral procession of the slain Jaffna District parliamentarian Nadaraja Raviraj into a demonstration that expresses strong sentiments against the war. The funeral procession that would take the remains of the late Nadaraja Raviraj to the Municipal Council Hall from the A. F. Raymonds Funeral Parlor in Borella and would turn into a demonstration which expresses strong sentiments of the people about the late parliamentarian described by a leading organizers of the rally Rajitha Senaratne as a person who "has always been with us in our struggles against war."

Tigers shifting cadres from east to Vanni: Commander Banu slips through military cordon

Colonel BahnuAccording to informed sources Tamil Tigers are moving their cadres from the east to the Vanni. It is reported that Colonel Bahnu, former Batticaloa – Amparai districts Special Commander of the Tigers, Colonel Ram, Commander and Praba of the Military Intelligence have managed to slip through the military cordon in the East and reached Vanni with around 100 of their cadres.

Mano GaneshanTamil Parliamentarian, Mano Ganeshan, who has protested against abduction and killings, told the Asian Tribune that City of Colombo has become a killing field for unknown Sinhala and Tamil armed gangs. "These contract killers conduct regular killings depending on money and political favors available to them" he said.
"Some of Sinhala and Tamil elements are behind these killings," Mr.Ganeshan charged.

FBI alerts India to 'threat' of hijacking US bound flights

Three days after Chennai airport received an 'al Qaeda warning', there are 'threats' of hijacking US bound flights from India, prompting the civil aviation authorities to sound a 'fresh' alert. The alert will be in force for a week, said officials of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), who were informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of an e-mail warning they had received from an unknown Indian address. "The FBI received the email, sent by unknown entities and originating from an Indian address on Saturday at its US headquarters", Indian officials said.

Movement of people and food in the A-9 road through Vavuniya

Sri Lanka Army revealed that 88 lorry loads of food and other essential items had been dispatched to un-cleared areas - Vanni in the Northern Province during the period between 03 November 2006 to 09 November 2006. According the Army statement posted in their official website, those consignments had reached areas in Kilinochchi and Mullaithievu districts via Omanthai and Uyilankulam Entry/Exit points.

RRDA and NWP Fisheries Ministry provide technical assistance for young divers in Sinnapaduwa

Local divers who dive around 120 feet in deep sea , in Sinnapaduwa, Chilaw say that they have found friendly technical assistance from the government the Ministry of Fisheries of the North Western Province and the Regional Resource Center [RRDA] provide their helping hand to obtain Oxygen refilling facility and proper diver training to upgrade abilities of the local divers. "Earlier we paid Rs.100 to refill Oxygen per tank for a private Oxygen vendor who based in this village. Now the RRDA provides Oxygen refills by charging Rs.5 per tank," said a young diver J.A.Chamindha.

Saudia to construct 1000 houses for tsunami affected victims in Sri Lanka

She is visiting the oil rich nation at the invitation of the Saudi Arabian Interior Minister Prince Prince Naif.

Despite their petty jealousies and deep divisions, the Indian media fraternity generally unites to fight whenever it smells a move by the government to ‘gag’ the press. It was because of stiff opposition from the entire fourth estate that the government has been unable to bring in any legislation that may curb the unfettered freedom that the press in India has enjoyed since Independence, barring, of course, the Emergency days. Now there is a demand to put fetters on ‘sting’ operations by TV channels.

Raviraj, refugees & the state

Young sailors are burning and drowning as a consequence of the legacy of a previous administration. The absence of the 30mm cannon is the reason our Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FACs) cannot outgun the Sea Tigers in their more maneuverable boats, and that absence is NOT primarily due to financial corruption on anyone’s part, as popular misconception has it, though that may have played a part. It is due to political sabotage. The Navy remains outgunned because the cannon were never bought. They were available in offers from both the USA and Israel. They were never bought because their purchase was interrupted or aborted, by creating a huge scandal about financial corruption.
