Share market gains last minute

The weekly stock market report of the HNB Stockbrokers indicated that a surge in prices of most of the high cap blue chip counters such as JKH, SLT, DIAL, HNB, DFCC etc. during the last 15 minutes of trading on Friday helped the market to end the week gaining some healthy ground. Friday alone the All Share Price Index (ASPI) and Milanka Price Index (MPI) picked up by a substantial 44.58 and 92.29 points before closing the week at 2526.6 points & 3453 points respectively. Week on Week (WoW) basis the ASPI gained by 50.9 points (2.06 percent) and MPI rose by 102.2 points (3.05 percent).

Internationalization (Privatization) of School Education in Comparison to the Free Public Education in Sri Lanka - A Postscript

In my paper published in "The Asian Tribune" in four parts last week, I examined various dimensions of the issues surrounding this topic. In this postscript, I wish to state several more important points regarding the issue. While there are criticisms of each schooling system, some with a degree of validity, in an era of open economies, globalization, relaxed territorial boundaries, mass migration, internet revolution etc, it is not practical for governments to go back to the era of 'control' and 'restrictions'. The fact there are two systems of school education in Sri Lanka highlights the phenomenon that there are two significant constituencies that utilize their services.

Sri Lanka embassy premises in Paris is attacked and damaged. The flag pole and the national flag too were destroyed on the early hours of Sunday, according reports. Sri Lanka Embassy statement revealed that miscreants alleged to be involved in the acts of vandalism belonged to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. This is the first time ever, a Sri Lanka diplomatic mission was attacked in a European country. The LTTE miscreants attempt to damage the Sri Lanka’s diplomatic premises in Paris is said to be a challenge thrown to the French Government under the leadership of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Board of Investment and the government of Sri Lanka have agreed to provide lands and other infrastructure for the investors who like to invest in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, but some leading and existing investors in the region said that their projects have been halted due to non availability of lands and other certifications from the government institutions. Responding BOI’s proposals, the Daya Group Director Kingsly Bernard said they have halted their five projects in the Ampara district due to the non availability of lands.

United Nations Human Rights Special Rapporteur expresses concern about Sigma Huda’s trial in Bangladesh

“The Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers wishes to express his concern concerning the proceedings of the trial of Ms. Sigma Huda, lawyer and Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children. On 27 August 2007, the Special Anti Corruption Court of Bangladesh sentenced Ms. Huda to three years imprisonment for aiding and abetting extortion found to have been committed by her husband", said a statement issued by the UN Human Rights Commission.

LTTE Insurgency would be brought to an end before the conclusion of his regime: Sri Lanka President declares

President address the gatheringAddressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s annual sessions President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that his regime would end the war before the life of its ruling period is over and it has not only taken back the Eastern Province which was under the terrorists but today it has taken over Silavaturai an important Tamil Tiger military garrison which has been run under the insurgent group since 1995. “ We will end this terrible war before our ruling period is over and not only from the Eastern Province but we have evicted the Tamil Tigers from the Western Coast of Silavaturai today”, said President to thousands of cheering delegates converged at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, referring to the latest military victory of the country’s security forces over one of the main sea port garrisons from the insurgent group that was a key receiving stations for their smuggled weapons
