A U.S. spokesperson for the organization also called on President Bush to speak forcefully on the issue.

Did LTTE Misled the State Department: Latest Country Report Hard to Comprehend ?

By Thrishantha Nanayakkara

Good friends are different from covert enemies in that friends help each other to stay away from danger by giving prior advises. I know that US State Department had been a good friend of Sri Lanka. I am a loss to comprehend why State department's latest report sounded so different. When I saw the State Department country report on Sri Lanka, I was socked and scared to believe my suspicion that this great institute may have been misled by terrorists to achieve several heinous objectives. I hope that LTTE's vicious propaganda to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka has not succeeded ultimately. They often worked in devious ways. Maybe a lot of Sri Lankans do not know that the US Department of State is a silent but genuine friend of Sri Lanka.

Rice and Human Rights

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

Three developments in the week just ended: the Rajapakse administration came under heavy criticism from the US State Department for human rights violations; employees of the state owned Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation decided to suspend all live telecasts in protest against the spate of attacks on several of their colleagues; and just 24 hours after the regime declared that it will not intervene in the rice market, rice oligopolists announced that the sky high prices will not come down, despite a bountiful harvest. Seemingly three isolated incidents there is yet an underlying thread common to all, which is important in understanding the world view and the modus operandi of Rajapakse rule.

Hypocrisy: Lurid Sociological Case Style

Sunday Discourse by Philip Fernando in Seattle

Atonement becomes an operative word only when politicians get caught with their pants down. The stunning implosion of the New York Governor Elliot Spitz charged for high-prized prostitution saw that word emerge again. Some called it a lurid sociological case study in hypocrisy. There were others who theorized that this was a case of victimless crime. Unfortunately that does not explain what is behind all this. The tarnished image of the New York mayor or his descent into oblivion makes very little sense if basic morals were ignored in this gory tale. Spitzer who got his fame prosecuting organized crime and has defamed himself beyond redemption. The hunter has become the hunted.

Call from Deoband

By Allabaksh - Syndicate Features

The overriding message from a religious conclave attended by about 5000 Muslim scholars and clerics at Deoband’s Darool-Uloom towards the end of February was that terrorism was against the tenets of Islam. Maulana Abdul Khaliq, delivering the speech on behalf of the ageing rector of Deoband, Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, spoke clearly: ‘Killing of innocents is not compatible with Islam’. It was perhaps the first instance when the collective voice of some of the most influential religious Muslim leaders had denounced terrorism in clear terms.

Speculation on SLT stimulates market activity

By Quintus Perera – Asian Tribune

HNB Stockbrokers in their weekly review indicated that the market lost some ground this week ending the positive run it maintained for eight consecutive weeks. Although the All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed slightly down from last week, the activity levels remained substantially high driven mainly by investor interest on SLT. Opening flat the indices moved to make slight gains during the mid week, but failed to keep up the pace towards the last two days of the week. Hence the ASPI lost a mere 1.8 points or 0.07 percent to 2566.0 points while the more sensitive MPI Milanka Price Index (MPI) moved in the opposite direction to close slightly higher at 3223.9 points, rising by 6.0 points or 0.19 percent on WoW.
