Wimal to loose Group Leader Position?

JVP will discuss to appoint their parlimentray group leader at a curical meeting which will be held on Tuesday [6] at their party headquarters. According to the party sources this meeting is their parlimentry group meeting, because the parliament will meet tommorrow to extend the state of emergency for another one month period. “Normally parlimentry group meetings are held at the Parliament complex, before one hour for the parliament sittings. This time the JVP has changed this traditional parliament customs and changed their normal venue.

Mahinda RajapaksePresident Mahinda Rajapakse said that all political parties are running their election campaigns in the eastern province freely. He stressed some people being in Colombo are fabricating rumors saying violent activities are occurring in the east. The President said that the TMVP and the Muslim Congress and all other main contesters for the Eastern provincial council election are launching their propaganda activities without any hindrance during a progressive review meeting of the plantation sector held at Temple Trees yesterday. President also said that the government is bound to strengthen the political freedom.

Cyclone devastated Burma, at least 351 people killed, thousands injured and 20,000 houses blown down

A Powerful Cyclone Nargis has hit Burma during the weekend, killing at least 351 people and destroying thousands of buildings, Burma's state television reported on Sunday. Latest reports reveled that thousands of people are injured and left homeless. The number of causalities is expected to rise, and it is still difficult to assess the situation on the ground. Tropical cyclone Nargis, rated a category-three storm, hit the south of the country on Saturday with wind speeds of more than 200 kilometres per hour.

JVP plans to setup a new national political movement

Three major political issues will be discussed at a special Central Committee meeting of the JVP in mid of this month. JVP sources say it would be a top level discussion. These major issues are to evaluate outcome of the Eastern Provincial Council election, Annual General meeting of the JVP and discuss actions against Wimal Weerawansa and his loyalists. Earlier General Secretary of the party Tylwin Silva said the party would stern action against Wimal Weerawansa and his follower's. Does UNP Want LTTE Back in the East - Asks TMVP

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has put out leaflets in many parts of the Eastern Province urging people to vote for Rauff Hakeem and United National Party candidates. The leaflet with the official Tiger emblem has urged the voters to vote for UNP and not for UPFA. Also it has now become a daily feature of TNA parliamentarians telephoning Tamils in the Eastern province and requesting them to vote for UNP. Azad Mowlana, spokesman for the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal speaking to ‘Asian Tribune’ said that LTTE leaflets urging people to vote for UNP and Rauff Hakeem clearly shows that a vote to UNP would amounts to a vote to LTTE.

Gotabhaya RajapakseDefence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse says the government has employed a systematic plan to defeat terrorism. He said the government has a firm determination to safeguard the Motherland as a unitary state. The aim of the government is to find an end to the decade old issue without passing it to the next generation. He stressed that the government will never give in to terrorism. In a television programme telecast on Saturday night he said some people are engaged in spreading rumours saying the LTTE had expanded in the recent past.

Government plans to provide solutions for local SMEs

Construction Ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka and Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka plan to provide solutions and assistance for burning issues of local small and medium scale contractors through their proposed interactive session is to be held in Colombo. The chamber hosts this session in collaboration with the ICTAD and invites local SMEs who involve in the construction sector. At present most of SMEs face financial and other issues due to lack of support from relevant agencies, said CEO of the chamber Dakshitha Talgodapitiya.

As 160 million Pakistanis held their breath in a hope for the politicians to restore the deposed Judiciary, the thirty day deadline, announced at the Muree Declaration, came and gone without even a whimper. Another deadline is promised for May 12 (no relation to the anniversary of the May 12, Karachi Carnage). Following the announcement of May 12 deadline, almost immediately, PPP leaders went into a frenzy casting serious doubts on honoring the alleged deadline. They plead, drafting a resolution to restore the deposed Judiciary is an extremely complicated task, that requires formations of several comities of Constitutional experts and etc., which makes it impossible to set a definite date.

VIP Chopper makes emergency landing in Mahiyangana

A VIP chopper carrying opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe made an emergency landing in Mahiyangana, while he was making the return trip from electioneering in the east. Mr. Wickremesinghe was returning from Samanturai when the Air Force VIP helicopter developed technical trouble around 5.15 pm today. Meanwhile Air Force said the SLAF has replaced another helicopter to bring the opposition leader to Colombo.
