Can America Change the Mindset to War?

By Habib Siddiqui

Fighting terrorism will not be easy in this age of ours when the superpowers and their allies have all the necessary ammos to justify their terrorization of unarmed civilians while the have-nots have very little to lose through their mindless suicidal acts of vengeance or retribution. As far as America is concerned, what is needed is thinking outside America's current paradigm to combat this menace. It is good to see that under a new leadership the Pentagon is realizing this fact. The 2008 National Defense Strategy, approved by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and released by the Pentagon on July 31 says that while the military’s top priority is to defeat al-Qaeda and other extremists, but winning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan alone will not achieve that

Fair and Free Elections: A Reply to Ambassador Robert Blake.

By Garvin Karunaratne, Ph.D.

The elections to the North Central and the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils have been held and it is reported that there were no major incidents of falsification. The actual results, specially the manner in which the elections were held is a sharp reply to the American Ambassador’s statement made recently that “the United States is interested in assuring a free and fair election” and he further added that “The United States takes a strong interest in free and fair elections around the world including here in S ri Lanka”. The Hon American Ambassador must understand that people in glass houses should not throw stones. It is sad that he has forgotten that his own master, the Hon President of the United States of America has stolen his Presidentship not once in 2000 but also in 2004.

UNP Election Stunts & The Aftermath-Isn’t It Time to Think?

By Darmitha-Kotte

Politics in Sri Lanka saw many facets during the NCP & Sabaragamuwa Elections held recently. The most unfortunate phenomenon witnessed was the fact that JVP (Amerasinghe Faction) finally showed their true colours when they decided to side with UNP and attack the GOSL and even our Indian neighbours. The results proved we hope to the JVP, that they are no longer the “cock of the walk” and that they are fast losing their grip as well as the backing (that they always felt) of the ordinary masses when they did a rather ungracious nose-dive. Just like the UNP, the JVP also seem to have forgotten within a very short time since their internal split, who are enemy No. 1 is right now-the LTTE terrorists. Their enemy No.1 happened to be the current GOSL on whom they lashed out strong criticism which proved to be useless indeed.
