Free and Fair US Presidential Election: How can it be ensured?

By Garvin Karunaratne

It has so happened that in the United States of America, though democractic norms have been followed in all elections, in the case of the Presidential Election, democracy has had no say. As stated in my book: "The Electronic Stealing of the 2004 US Presidential Election" According to the US Constitution it is the "Electoral College" that decides and there is no guideline that the Electoral College has to follow the wishes of the majority of people and how they have voted…. In addition to the erosion of democracy by the machinations of the Electoral College System lies the very callous and unjustifiable manner in which "the 2000 US Presidential Election" was stolen by the Judiciary. As Dershowitz states, "it was a dignified but undemocratic resolution behind closed doors by unelected and politically unaccountable judges who are not supposed to be involved in making political decisions". There should never be an instance where a manual recount is stopped and not authorized… To add insult to injury is the manner in which "the 2004 US Presidential Election" was hijacked not by not counting the votes but by the electronic manipulation in the tabulation and totaling of ballots….

A need for real Tamil leadership

By Shenali Waduge

“The war has reached a significant phase” so says most international media channels. We cannot be naïve to the fact that regaining lost territory & winning the battle will finally put to rest 30 years of calamity. While the army surges ahead it is time for the people of Sri Lanka to start working upon a change in mindset away from extremes & not allow the past to haunt the decisions that should create a fresh start for the entire country. Only then can we expect changes for the better. It is in this scenario that we need to look at the present leadership of the Tamil people & wonder what ails its present existence & why they are not suited to continue to function as the representatives of the Tamil people.
