What has Islam to do with terrorism?

By Md. Vazeeruddin - Syndicate Features

Since 9/11 in the USA and 7/7 in Britain, the expression “Islamic terrorism” has gained currency throughout the world, as though terrorism is an offshoot of Islam. Surprisingly enough, nobody has bothered to ask if there was no act of terrorism before these two disgraceful incidents. True, both these outrages, and many in India too, were perpetrated by some Muslims in the name of Islam, but is that reason enough to trace their homicidal mania to their religion?

Colonel Karuna, Mr Compassion – a magnet for other aliases

Hemantha Abeywardena writes from London…….

We ought to give the benefit of all doubts – along with the credit - regarding the aliases bestowed upon the top Tiger commanders, to its founder, Mr Prabhakaran, because the choice of words does make sense. The top men in the hierarchy, either lived up to their respective secondary names or having been living up to it, in order, not to contradict both the leader and his literary ingenuity – of course, up until some mishap happened, engineered by the enemy, or a foreign spy agency or changing political landscape or just the onset of belated wisdom.

Indian Nuclear Deal

By L. Jayasooriya

The nuclear deal that India has struck with America or America has struck with India as the case may be could be a potential threat, not in terms of nuclear weapons, but in terms of the unknown that could happen to the stability of all Asian countries over which India wants to exercise her hegemony with evil intentions. This could also shift the balance of power between Pakistan and India in the latter’s favor unless Pakistan adopts counter measures by having deals with Russia and China that would neutralize the threat. Deals with Russia and China both will more than neutralize all possible threats against Pakistan.

McCain and Palin Dragged Down by Wall Street Crash, End not in Sight

Sunday Discourse by Philip Fernando for Asian Tribune

Remember the Republican Convention when John McCain went ahead in the polls over Barack Obama. That is ancient history now. Obama is ahead six points nationally and may be by larger margins in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, states won by George Bush in 2004. McCain is paying the price for the Bush policies that have crashed. All five US investment banks -- Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers, Merrill-Lynch, and Goldman Sachs are not worth their names today. So are the country’s largest loan bank, Washington Mutual and the largest insurance company, AIG, all have gone belly up, and $8 trillion in stock value has disappeared after passage of the $700 billion federal bailout of Wall Street. No bottom is in sight to the worst market crash since 1929.

Tigers have to be totally silenced if Lankan Tamils need their equal rights – Cho Ramaswamy

Cho RamaswamyIndia should not help the Tigers from escaping from the hands of the Sri Lankan military. If the Tamils have to get equal rights along with the Sinhalese, if the Tamils need a federal set up, then it means that the Tigers have to be totally silenced. India should not interfere in this situation. India can only insist that the Sri Lankan Government deal with their Tamils fairly. In an exclusive interview with the Editor of "Asian Tribune," Cho Ramaswamy said, “Well … my opinion is very clear. India should not help the Tigers from escaping from the hands of the Sri Lankan military. If the Tamils have to get equal rights along with the Sinhalese, if the Tamils need a federal set up, then it means that the Tigers have to be totally silenced.
