Debutant Basil - a successful troubleshooter for Sri Lanka

Basil - PranabLast week, Basil Rajapaksa MP was in New Delhi and he successfully managed to difuse the simmering tensions and concerns of the Indian Government by presenting the Sri Lanka’s case convincingly to the Indian authorities. Even Pranab Mukerjee, India’s External Affairs Minister openly expressed satisfaction on his recent talks with Sri Lankan special envoy Basil Rajapaksa. As a special envoy of Sri Lanka’s President, Basil Rajapakse turned out to be a very successful troubleshooter in his debut in the fathomless international political arena.

Colombo Municipal Council suspended

Colombo Municipal Council which has another one and a half years left to complete it term, was suspended yesterday and a retired High Court judge has been appointed to go into the allegations of short comings and lapses against the Mayor and the Municipal Council. Alavi Mowlana, Governor of the Western Province speaking to "Asian Tribune" said that Colombo Municipality was under the UNP for the past 25 years, and remained UNP oriented. The present lapses and short comings, it was said has been inherited from the past mayors and councilors.

Probe on journalist on Norway's payroll

Investigations are underway to find out how a Sinhala journalist on the payroll of the Norwegian Agency NORAD got himself invited to cover the London and Hague photo exhibitions depicting LTTE atrocities. According to sources in contact with the Defence Ministry it has been revealed that this 'peacenik' has been instructed to make a note of members of PLOTE, EPDP and other anti-Tiger Tamil groups, attending the two exhibitions. The journalist in question is a senior staffer of a leading privately-owned newspaper company.

Inventors of the modern suicide jacket, the LTTE, mastered the use of female suicide bombers and carried out more suicide attacks than any other terrorist organization in the world. A terror outfit responsible for assassinating two world leaders and the largest number of politicians is losing its war. An organization that effectively controlled about half of the country is confined to mere twenty square miles and shrinking. How it was possible for the Sri Lankan military to beat the number one terror organization in the world?

Nuwara Eliya city and Yongzhou city signs MOU to enhance economic cooperation

Sri Lankan delegation led by Governor, Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, together with Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Deshamanya P.D. Chandana Lal Karunaratne, visited Yongzhou City (Hunan Province) to sign an MOU to establish sister city ties on 12th October 2008. The MOU entails cooperation in economy, trade, science, technology and tourism. It is envisaged with the signing of the Sister City Agreement, Sri Lanka would be able to harness rapid economic and infrastructural development, greater market access and increase people to people contact with the cities in Eastern China.

New Russian Ambassador pays first call on Foreign Minister

While Sri Lanka and Russia have traditionally shared strong bilateral relations over many years, the two countries must work towards a structured agenda with milestones to enhance these links, observed Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when the Ambassador for the Russian Federation, Vladimir P Mikhailov paid his first call on the Minister, following the presentation of his credentials earlier this month. He said that with the new Ambassador taking up office, it would be appropriate to commence an agenda for cooperation which could be measured against the achievements of the envisaged milestones.

DHL to assist Government in disaster management

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Ports and Aviation to assist the Government of Sri Lanka in supporting disaster response through the donation of specified services by the DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT). The DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) is a DPWN initiative under its Corporate Social Responsibility umbrella, to provide a logistics Disaster Response capability, based on its expertise in Airport Logistics Management, to support Government's in disaster relief efforts.

Obama Makes Closing Arguments on Major TV Networks with Paid Ad

Barack Obama Barack Obama bought network time paying nearly $3 million for his 30 minute informational advertisement yesterday. That was the first time since Ross Perot, a presidential candidate 16 years ago bought network time, in prime time for making his closing arguments to the American public. The presentation was heavy in strings, flags, presidential imagery and some Americana filmed by Davis Guggenheim, whose father was the campaign documentarian of Robert F. Kennedy.
