Obama Proposes 2.5 Million Jobs for a Thriving Wall Street and Main Street

President-elect Barack Obama named key members of his administration's economic team Monday, including New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner as his Treasury Secretary nominee and former Harvard President Lawrence Summers as the director of the National Economic Council. The team will immediately work on economic revival amidst the unprecedented downturn in the economy. Creating 2.5 million jobs would be the main goal. Many analysts believe that the team would bring fresh thinking, both a depth of experience and a wealth of bold, new ideas. Obama said that they all share his fundamental belief that there cannot have a thriving Wall Street without a thriving Main Street," at a press conference Monday in Chicago.

Doha meeting upgraded to summit of world leaders

At last weekend's summit in Washington, DC, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pressed world leaders to attend the upcoming five-day Conference on Financing for Development, to be held in Doha beginning 29 November. This meeting has since grown to be a full-fledged summit, with some 40 Heads of State or Government from the developed and developing world arriving to discuss the next steps for follow-up to the Monterrey Consensus and managing the global financial crisis.

University Hospital in Texas Searching for Family of Anton Karunaratne, a Sri Lankan

Sri Lankan by the name of Anton Karunaratne has lost his memory. The university hospital in San Antonio, Texas issued a bulletin requesting Sri Lankans who are aware of the identity of Anton to contact them. He is not able to identify himself. The hospital bulletin issued on Anton Karunaratne is given below. This is to inform that the authorities of the University of Health System, 4502 Medical Drive San Antonio in TX 78229 has requested the public to help in finding friends and family of Mr. Anton Karunaratne (55 years old ), who was admitted at the University Hospital on November 15 , 2008.

UN Agency in virtual campaign to fight hunger

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has called for people from all walks of life to join its online "virtual wall" to fight hunger, an initiative that will provide free meals for nearly 60 million children worldwide who go to school hungry. For a small donation "The Wall Against Hunger" allows individuals to post their picture on a website – which several celebrities and sports personalities have already pledged to join – and email their wall images to friends as well as bookmark them to their social networking websites. "The push to end world hunger is one thing that people across all political spectrums, all religions, and all nations can join," said the Director of Public Policy, Communications and Private Partnerships, Nancy Roman.

Karunanidhi convenes an all a party meeting on Sri Lankan Tamils

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kalaigar. M. Karunanidhi has convened an All Party meeting to be held today, to discuss issues and concerns of collective stands of Tamil Nadu leaders on stopping the war in Sri Lanka by bringing back the Cease Fire Agreement between Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and also to discuss the next course of actions with the Tamil Nadu leaders on the Sri Lankan Tamils plights. In the meantime, AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should resign if he is serious about alleviating the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils. "...he (Karunanidhi) should resign from chief ministership in Tamil Nadu as a matter of protest against what he calls the centre's inaction and seek a fresh mandate," she said.

To stop the destruction of the Sethu Samudram – Scientists, Academics and Religious Leaders Converge in London

Ecologists, academics and scientists and religious leaders around the world organized by the US based living Planet Foundation are meeting today (November 25) at London’s historic Linnean Society, Burlington House in Piccadilly to ask Indian and Sri Lankan governments to persuade UNESCO to designate the Gulf of Mannar a World Heritage site and stop the imminent devastation that could cause to the environment by the controversial Sethu Samudram project. The seminar will last two days continuously.

The Club of Madrid has announced the incorporation of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s devoted human rights leader and most noted prisoner of conscience, as Honorary Member. Australian based SPUR urges legal action against Norwegians Peoples’ Aid and Solidar

Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights for Sri Lanka, (Spur) based in Melbourne, Australia has written to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa urging to take legal action against the two European international non-government agencies which operated in the uncleared region of Vanni. In the letter written by Ranjith Soysa, the Spokesperson of SPUR has urged the Sri Lankan President to take legal action against Norwegians Peoples’ Aid and Solidar, the two INGOs from Norway and Belgium and to claim compensation for loss of life, damage to public property directly attributable to their negligence and/or complicity with the LTTE.

Thailand: Anti Government protestors vow to bring down the government by tomorrow

Uncertainity prevails in Thailand, as anti-government protestors vowed to bring down by Wednesday the elected government of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who is at present away in Lima, Peru attending an economic summit. Anti-government protesters also anounced that they will not allow the flight bringing Thai Prime Minister from Lima landing at Thailand’s international Suvarnabhumi Airport. Political situation in Thailand emerging more and more uncontrollable. Thailand's anti-government protest movement, the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), claim they have taken physical possession of the country's temporary Government House at Don Mueang Airport, which it says is a further step in its plan to topple the government.
