Sri Lanka Government on pretext of fighting LTTE fighting minority Tamils says US Senator Bob Casey

Bob CaseyIn his opening statement at the hearing of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 'Recent Developments in Sri Lanka' Senator Bob Casey who presided over the hearing declared that the Government of Sri Lanka "frames its war against the LTTE as a war against terror, there exists a broader ethnic conflict between the minority Tamils and majority Sinhalese that has spanned for decades". If one interpret this statement in to plain language what Senator Casey who is also the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern, South and Central Asian Affairs said was that the Government of Sri Lanka in her military battle against the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) has "framed" it as a war against terror or terrorism but in reality it is an exercise against the minority Tamils in the Island though he refrained from using the term 'suppression'.

Who’s plan is Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan voicing?

By Shenali Waduge

It is common knowledge that India’s RAW was instrumental in forging the Karuna-Prabakaran deadlock and ultimate breakaway that served the interest of the Rajapakse Government and greatly assisted in liberating the East of LTTE domain. Thus, when calls for the implementation of 13th Amendment comes from this democratized former LTTE leader, it naturally raises eyebrows to wonder who’s thinking is being vocalized by the new Member of Parliament, especially when he says that Sri Lanka needs Indian assistance. It is important that Sri Lanka’s future upon the elimination of LTTE domination should depart from the mentality of thinking in Sinhala or Tamil only. Both groups must know the others language and it is admirable that the education system has introduced Tamil to Sinhala medium schools and similarly it should also ensure that Tamil medium children also learn Sinhala – this way a major barrier will be bridged.

How the Global Economic Crisis Affects Sri Lanka

By K. R. Pushparanjan

We too have now begun to feel the heat of ill-effects of the world economic recession despite various optimistic statements made by politicians and the top brass at high echelons in the government. Hundreds of private sector establishments in a number of fields have been shut down and employees are facing challenges they never ever thought could be realities. Even BOI companies with foreign investments are steering in the direction of scaling down operations and retrenching employees. Naturally and obviously, when the country after country even in the highly developed world have begun to feel the heat of the global meltdown at their doorway, an already ailing economy like ours cannot conceal from the after effects of the chaos in the global financial markets.

Right-to-Information (RTI) movement brewing in UP

By Anjali Singh from Lucknow

The "Right to Information Act" (RTI) may be in place but is it actually translating into answers for those seeking them under it? Most who have used the act respond with a resounding NO. But then all hope is not lost as a movement in UP is now brewing amongst the people in the state capital which plans to ask for information under the RTI Act and get it too. People like Urvashi Sharma who is a house wife and a mother of two but she displays an amazing awareness of her rights as a citizen of India. Better still she prefers to call herself a social worker and RTI activist.

The Hypocrisy Of A Political Solution

By L. Jayasooriya

Because of the talk that has been spread around that the government of Sri Lanka was killing Tamil civilians, our president with all good intentions invited the UN chief Mr. Ban-Ky Moon to personally come and see for himself what is happening. There was hesitation for a few days during which it was said that the UN chief has still not decided anything about it. Some days later, instead of the UN chief came Mr. Holmes who was warmly received at the highest places and our Defence Secretary personally accompanied Mr. Holmes when he went to meet with the Tamil civilians who have fled from the LTTE clutches to the safety of the army.

Humanize the Human Rights

By William Gomes

Humanize the Human Rights are the people’s demand of the time in Bangladesh. Some time in many issues we have experienced the raising voice against the factual human rights violations. Same time we do experienced the political partisanship and demoralization of human rights groups as well as individual Human Rights defenders. As a example human rights organizations are divided in the name and favor of politics, religion and donor orientated agenda and propaganda.

Pakistan army and ISI in CIA’s firing line

By Asif Haroon Raja

It is now getting clear as to why FATA has been declared most dangerous place on earth. After making series of allegations that FATA is the main breeding ground where militants and suicide bombers are trained for launching into Afghanistan; where the entire senior leadership of Al-Qaeda and Taliban is housed; and from where possible attack on US homeland would take off, so far not a single training camp has been located in FATA, nor any high-profile militant leader nabbed or killed. This is in spite of continuous hovering of spy planes and next door US-NATO troops equipped with latest state-of-the-art surveillance and detection gadgets breathing over Pakistan’s neck, and RAW-CIA-Mossad agents having infiltrated into FATA in big numbers.
