Indian poll spin: biggies in despair, regional players in high spirits

By M Rama Rao, India Editor, Asian Tribune

From Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the South to Maharashtra in the West, Uttar Pradesh in the North, Bihar and Bengal in the east, the story is uniformly the same: the biggies of Indian electoral scene - Congress and the Bharatiya Janata party are in great despair as their local allies have begun to arm-twist them. In fact, the BJP has suffered a major jolt in Orissa, where its 11-year old alliance with the local Biju Janata Dal had broken, and in Maharashtra where its long time friend Shiv Sena is unwilling to commit support to BJP for Prime Minister’s post should there be a Maharashtra in the race.

Legitimacy of War Crimes Court Questioned Over Sudan

By Thalif Deen - Inter Press Service

The ongoing political crisis in Sudan is expected to worsen in the face of a rash of threats and warnings following the indictment last week of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The beleaguered Sudanese president has threatened to expel diplomats from Khartoum and throw out more humanitarian organisations - in addition to the 13 that were run out of town last week - in retaliation for the indictment. At the same time, there is considerable speculation that some, or all, of the 30 African countries who are state parties (of a total of 108) to the Rome Statute that created the ICC, may decide to pull out, threatening the virtual collapse of the world's key criminal court.

Prabhakaran is capable of enacting another Jallianwalla Bagh episode by massacring three hundred thousand innocent civilians

Do not allow LTTE to achieve their ambition of seeing the Jallianwalla Bagh incident repeated here so that they can rouse the feelings of the Tamils all over the World and the International Community. In a letter to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front V. Anandasangaree pointed out that LTTE "is using over three hundred thousand people and starving them is not incapable of doing anything to achieve their end.” He added, Jallianwalla Bagh is the incident in which the British Soldiers fired at a peaceful meeting continuously for ten minutes while the trapped Indians screamed for mercy. The 1650 rounds they fired killed and wounded 1516 people."

Terror Bowls Over Cricket

By Allabaksh - Syndicate Features

The terror attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore has shaken the cricketing world and will perhaps keep Pakistan out of international cricket matches for a long time. But listening and reading to some of the commentaries by ‘experts’ in Pakistan the more shocking thing appears to be a hidden glee among the Pakistanis that the terrorists’ attack on cricketers has given them an opportunity to return the compliments that India had paid them after the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Sri Lanka government condemns LTTE attack on food ship to Mullaitivu

The Government of Sri Lanka strongly condemns the artillery shelling by the LTTE today (9th March 2009) of a ship carrying urgent supplies of food and other essential items to the civilians who are being held hostage by the LTTE in the narrow coastal strip, north of Mullaitivu. Addressing a media briefing at the Ministry today, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama vehemently denounced this cowardly attack by the LTTE on an unarmed vessel engaged in a purely humanitarian mission to feed the people. The LTTE is trying to starve these self-same Tamil people whom it claims to represent, perhaps with the ulterior motive of giving credence to the myth of starvation that is being circulated in some quarters internationally by the LTTE’s propaganda machinery.

Rambling thoughts on US dictated war on terror

By Asif Haroon Raja

The onus of militarizing Pakistani society and injecting extremism and sectarianism rests on USA. CIA played a big role in destroying the social fabric of Pak society because of its drug trade from Afghanistan to USA-European markets through Pakistan throughout the eight-year Afghan war in the 1980s. CIA funded madrassas in Pakistan were directed to prepare young students acquiring religious training to become Jihadis. They were given military training by MI-6 and CIA. Availability of funds and government patronage led to phenomenal growth of madrassas in Pakistan.

Asian Tribune – an Emerging Global Media Brand with a Unique Fashion

On 23 April, The Asian Tribune will be celebrating its 9th year of its existence in the relatively new field of online news reporting and analysis. During this period, we have been playing our role in defending the rights of human beings to live in freedom with dignity, all over the world, in general and Asia, in particular. We took a firm stance against terror, wherever it raised its ugly head, using religion or race as a perfect cover. We condemn the suffering of unarmed civilians as a result of these conflicts. In short, we did not approve of winnings rights of one community or religion at the expense of the innocent lives of defenceless masses; we deliberately chose not to go with the popular flow that implicitly leads to glorifying terrorism; the Asian Tribune has never been in the business of elevating those who commit the acts against humanity to the rank of freedom fighters.
