In a couple of days or more, my fellow Sri Lankans will choose their president. While this exercise alone says volumes about the resilience of the democratic process in a land which has seen at least a few 'patriots' who dared question that sacred process (when they were in power, of course!) that's another story, for another day.

Former Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon is the new National Security Advisor, succeeding M.K. Narayanan who has already been designated as the West Bengal Governor. Menon might take charge on January 23. The government on Thursday issued orders appointing Shiv Shankar Menon as the next NSA. Menon, who retired as Foreign Secretary last year, will be the fourth incumbent to the post.

The pro-Telangana agitation in Andhra Pradesh is again gaining momentum, after a brief lull. The state is now on the boil. Normal life in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the Telangana region came to a halt as a 48-hour shutdown called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of students began on Wednesday to protest the delay in the formation of a separate state out of Andhra Pradesh. Since Jan 18, two students had killed themselves over the issue.
