President Mahinda Rajapaksha, addressing the nation at the 62nd Independence Day celebrations in Kandy, assured that as the 30 years long war was over, his regime will fully dedicate to regain what the country lost during the period of civil war.

Today is the 62nd anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence. This is the first such celebration of Sri Lanka’s freedom since the defeat of terrorism in the country. Today’s independence day has significance, as it is held immediately after peoples’ verdict where they have expressed their firm and resounding commitment to democracy.

In a clear sign of thaw in India, Pakistan relations which had remained frozen since the Mumbai terror attacks, it has been announced that Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will travel to Pakistan on February 26 for a SAARC meeting on a two-day visit. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna made the announcement to journalists accompanying him on a flight to Kuwait for a two-day visit on Wednesday.

The Minister of Tourism Achala Jagoda summoned the hotel management of the Cinnamon Lake (former Trans Asia) hotel to the Tourism Ministry and said to have discussed over the alleged incident of booking 70 rooms by the so called common opposition presidential candidate on January 26 and other reported incidents have subsequently taken place in the hotel.
