India: UP assembly votes move to split State into four regions

Amidst din, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday passed a controversial resolution on splitting the state into four parts by voice vote minutes after which the lower house was adjourned sine die.

Sri Lanka donated over US $ 50,000 worth of aid to Thailand today as relief to their flood affected people. The ceremony to hand over the consignment of aid was held at the Ministry of External Affairs where External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L Peiris handed over a token of the consignment to Ms, Rungnapa Srivannavit, the Chargé d’ Affaires of the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo.

SRSG Coomaraswamy witnesses action plan signing for the release of children in the Central African Republic

Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, traveled to the Central African Republic to assess the situation of the Lord’s Resistance Army(LRA) and to sign an agreement or ‘action plan’ for the release of child soldiers with the Convention des patriotes pour la justice et la paix (CPJP), an armed rebel group listed by the United Nations for recruitment and use of children.

Burma: CSW urges international community to highlight plight of ethnic nationalities

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) today expressed concern that the plight of Burma’s ethnic nationalities is being neglected in the process of engagement with Burma’s regime. CSW particularly highlights continuing severe violations of human rights, including the use of rape, forced labor, religious persecution, torture and killings in Kachin State, where the Burma Army has been waging an offensive against ethnic civilians since breaking a 17-year ceasefire with the Kachin Independence Organization/Army (KIO/A) in June.
