Sri Lanka commends Report by Mr. Maina Kiai - Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly

Sri Lanka notes the Report of the Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association Mr. Maina Kiai containing information on the activities undertaken during the period under review as well as a thematic elaboration of his mandate.

Mr. Maina Kiai is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. He took up his functions on 1 May 2011, for an initial period of three years.

Professor Carlo Fonseka, the Chairman of National Authority on Tobacco & Alcohol participating as the chief guest at an event held at Ananda College, Colombo on 31st May to mark the World No Tobacco Day, advised the students to be away from tobacco smoking, if they want to excel in their studies and become healthy and useful citizens of this country.

New Sri Lanka Embassy in Bahrain Opened

In another major step toward fulfilling the vision of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to forge links with countries in all parts of the globe, Neomal Perera, Deputy Minister of External Affairs of Sri Lanka, representing Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, and Ghanim bin Fadhl Al Buainain, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, ceremonially opened the newly established Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manama, Bahrain in the presence of Bahranian dignitaries, including members of the Bahrainian Parliament, senior officials of the Bahrain Foreign Ministry, as well as a large number of the vibrant Sri Lankan community residing in the Kingdom.
