World Humanitarian Day commemorated in Sri Lanka

World Humanitarian Day honors those who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and those who continue to bring assistance and relief to millions. In December 2008 the UN General Assembly declared 19 August as World Humanitarian Day to commemorate the day when 22 UN staff tragically lost their lives in Iraq in a massive bomb attack on the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. During the past decade, over 800 aid workers worldwide have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Petty Politics: Fueling Fundamentalism

Political rivals in India are currently engaged in an intense battle over the rise of extremism and terrorism, hoping that their view on the subject will help them garner enough votes to capture (or retain) power in the next Lok Sabha polls. U.S. Embassy grants $40,120 to Department of Archaeology

On Monday, the U.S. Embassy, through its Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation program, is granting $40,120 (approximately 5.3 million SLR) for the conservation of archaeological materials to the Department of Archaeology in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
