I remember, when I was a small child In the mid-seventies living in Sri Lanka, a country with a closed economy that had banned imports. Like most Sri Lankan children, I could eat many things but rice and curry were not among my favorites.

The Book 'The Valley of Gems' containing a collection of Parliamentary speeches of the late Dr. A. C. S. Hameed, veteran Parliamentarian and the first Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, was ceremonially launched at a ceremony held at the BMICH on Saturday, February 1 at 3.30 p.m.

Break the silence around cancer

The focus of this year's World Cancer Day (4 February 2014) is on Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration: Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer, under the tagline 'Debunk the myths' (the 4 myths of-- we do not need to talk about cancer; there are no symptoms of cancer; there is nothing I can do about cancer; I do not have the right to cancer care). Myths indeed these are, and coupled with gender inequities, they restrict women in low resource settings from accessing essential cancer services for early detection and cancer prevention programme.

Nepal Army Chief in Jaffna

General Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Chief of Army Staff of Nepal, presently in Sri Lanka with a delegation at the invitation of his Sri Lanka's counterpart, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake went to Jaffna on Sunday (2) where he met the Jaffna Security Force Commander before he visited Nallur Hindu Temple and several other places.
