Maldives’ Minister of Defence and National Security Col (Ret.) Mohamed Nazim called on President Rajapaksa at the Kurumba Island Resort yesterday (June 26). Among the requests the Minister asked of Sri Lanka is for assistance in acquiring knowledge, training and other facilities to develop the defence services in the Maldives.

18 killed, 30 injured in AP blaze after gas pipeline bursts

A 20-year –old gas pipeline burst yesterday on the Andhra Pradesh coast and the leaping flames at Nagram village some short distance from Rajhamundry town quickly swept through nearby houses and coconut plantations, leaving behind 18 dead and at least 30 with severe burns.

Lanka Factory Index strengthens

Despite cost pressures, Sri Lanka’s manufacturing signalled an expansion in the first quarter–while the country’s global competitiveness ranking moved up by three notches. “The Factory Industry Production Index that stood at 106.4 this January strengthened and by March it increased to 115.9. I am also pleased give the good news that Sri Lanka has advanced from rank 68 to 65 in the latest Global Competitiveness Index of 2013-2014” said an upbeat Rishad Bathiudeen (Minister of Industry and Commerce of Sri Lanka) on 27 June in Colombo.
