India That Is Hindustan

Some eminent members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have mercifully come out with a very simple prescription to end the cycle of communal strife in the country and remove cantankerous religion and caste-based differences among them: Everyone who lives in ‘Hindustan’ (India) should call himself/herself a ‘Hindu’. It is wrong neither grammatically nor politically if those who live in ‘Hindustan’ are called ‘Hindus’, just as all those who live in America are called Americans. Why, these BJP leaders are apt to point out, in the Gulf, all Indians are addressed as ‘Hindus’.
