On objections to Narendra Modi visiting Sri Lanka

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in Kandy yesterday that there were objections to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting Sri Lanka, but the main objection was against entering into agreements harmful to the country.

Ernest Corea, distinguished editor and esteemed diplomat passed away

Ernest Corea, one of Sri Lanka’s distinguished newspaper editors and accomplished diplomats passed away yesterday in USA after a long bout with diabetes. He was editor of ‘The Daily News’ and ‘Sunday Observer’ and later headed the embassies in Canada and USA. He was awarded the Deshabandu Class 1 National Day honour for meritorious diplomatic service. He was a stout defender of the freedom of press.

Modi’s Second Visit to Sri Lanka

Neither Colombo nor New Delhi has given a high profile billing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second visit to Sri Lanka (May 11-12, 2017). It is possible that both sides want to keep the focus of the visit strictly on Vesak Day- the day that commemorates the birth, enlightenment and nirvana of Lord Buddha- celebrations in which representatives of over 100 countries are participating.
