New Delhi, 15 December, (Asiantribune.com): Southeast Asian leaders' call to the Burmese junta to expedite democratic reforms and release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other detainees has been welcomed by Burmese democratic groups particularly National Coalition Government of Union of Burma (NCGUB), which is delighted at the plans to send a ASEAN mission to Burma to assess the ground situation.

In a statement NCGUB said Burmese democracy movement always considered itself as part of the Southeast Asian family and that its destiny lies with the community of Southeast Asian Nations, saying that the Burmese value regional cooperation.

Underscoring the vital importance of democracy in Burma, the statement said the NCGUB is gratified with the special attention given by the ASEAN leaders on the lack of progress in the process of national reconciliation and democratization in their neighborhood.

ASEAN countries have had ample experience in positively contributing to the restoration of peace, national reconciliation, and crafting processes of democratic transition in regional countries with deep-rooted conflicts, the statement said and recalled ASEAN role in achieving a political settlement in Cambodia, East Timor and Aceh.
