[b]Australian Police raid LTTE premises and take in for questioning Tamil suspects funding terrorism in Sri Lanka[/b]

[b]Melbourne, 24 November, ([/b] In a concerted move against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – a banned terrorist organization – the Australian Federal Police raided several homes of suspected LTTE agents in Melbourne early morning yesterday. The key suspects were taken in for questioning for funding the LTTE with Rs. 236 million between April 2003 and November 2005.

Among those taken in for questioning are: 1) Thillai Jeyakumar, the head of Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), 2) Sivaraj Jathevan, editor of the Eelam Murasi, the propaganda bi-monthly newspaper published in France but circulated in Australia in Australia 3) his wife, Abiramai Jathevan 4) Aruran Vinyanamoorthy, 5) and Dr. Ponniah Sathianathan, a medical practitioner in Preston, a suburb of Melbourne. Dr. Sathianathan was released after his statement was recorded by the Police.

The Federal police operations related to violations of the UN Security Council Resolution 1373 – the key resolution prohibiting terrorist activity – and the Australian Criminal Code Act of 1995.

The warrants executed related to : 1) intentionally being a member of a banned terrorist organization under subsection 102.3 (1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995; 2) internationally provide and collect funds to be used in terrorist activity; 3) received or made available funds for terrorists activity and 4) under section 102.6 funding a terrorist organization.
