Bangladeshi PM Comes Calling to India
By M Rama Rao
New Delhi: Optimists and sceptics are having a field day as the Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is about to begin a three –day visit to India (from March 20). She is not known to be India friendly. And her coalition government has allowed bilateral ties to plummet to such a low level that it is difficult to entertain any optimism, though Bangladesh foreign minister M Morshed Khan flew in ahead of the visit to assure South Block, "Our relations with India are very important economically, geographically and strategically too".
Bangladesh has slipped into election mode. It is possible Khaleda may like to use the India card for political gains, and to check-mate the other Begum, Sheikh Hasina of Awami League, who has been giving her sleepless nights for the past five years. Otherwise, it is difficult to appreciate why she has decided to visit Delhi for the first time after becoming the Prime Minister for the second time.
