Chandrika to drop a bomb on Mahinda Rajapakse in her farewell speech today?

Colombo, 15 November, (;President Chandrika Kumaratunga is expected to make her farewell speech to the nation today. She is expected to make a dignified exit from her 11-year-old office as the President of Sri Lanka.

But political circles also speculate as to whether she would put a bomb under the chair of Mahinda Rajapakse before she leaves. She is under pressure from the UNP, NGOs close to her and her own family members to undermine the campaign of Mahinda Rajapakse.

The presidential race has been running neck-to-neck. However, the latest announcement of Vignyanamoorthi Mulralitharan (Col. Karuna) that his faction in the east would back Mahinda Rajapakse can easily tip the scales. This would be a big blow to the chances of Ranil Wickremesinghe winning the presidency on November 17. The collective blast of the anti-LTTE Tamil forces is hitting Ranil Wickremesinghe hard from the north and the east. UNP sources are banking on President Kumaratunga to save them at the last minute by even a veiled attack on Mahinda Rajapakse -- her own nominee to succeed her.

Political circles are concerned about her unpredictable tongue-lashing that she delivers from time to time on her opponents. Whether she will go down backing her arch political rival whom she castigated throughout her 11-year term in office is still not clear. If she does that she will go down as the most unprincipled political leader who stabbed her own candidate in the back. Neither her party nor the left which has been supporting her will forgive her.
