Even before he was born in Giruwapattuwa, Mahinda Rajapaksa had a name. He had a surname- Rajapaksa. He was born into an illustrious family with a precious surname.

The Rajapaksa family was closely associated with Sri Lankan politics, since the days of D.M.Rajapaksa, the Lion of Ruhuna. The Rajapaksas were well known for their generosity, bravery, uprightness and patriotism. D.M.Rajapaksa was a follower of Dr. S.A.Wickramasinghe in his election campaign during the State Council in 1931. Dr. Wickramasinghe who carried out the anti-imperialist campaign won the election. D.M.Rajapaksa who was a pillar of strength to his victory, entered active politics later at one of the state council elections. D.A.Rajapaksa, George Rajapaksa and Lakshman Rajapaksa became formidable political icons in Ruhuna after the death of D.M.Rajapaksa.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was the newest addition to this political dynasty in 1970, after his father's death.. Chamal and Nirupama Rajapaksa entered politics after him.
