London 10 November (Asiantribune.com):A six-member team from the Commonwealth will begin its preliminary work today in Sri Lanka observing the preparations for Sri Lanka’s presidential election to be held in November 17.

The Commonwealth Expert Team, as it is called, sent by Secretary-General Don McKinnon to observe the preparations for the crucial presidential election, the polling, counting, the results process and the overall electoral environment, is led by Hon Cassam Uteem, a former president of Mauritius, another Indian Ocean island nation.

The Commonwealth Secretariat decided to send a mission on a request made by Sri Lanka’s Election Commissioner.

The Commonwealth sent observer groups to the Sri Lanka parliamentary elections in 2001 and 2004.
