The Contest for the East

The Contest for the East

Nature abhors a vacuum, so, it seems, does politics. The government’s obvious inability to respond effectively to the Tiger challenge has created a dangerous politico-psychological vacuum. Nowhere is this more evident than in the multi-ethnic, multi-religious East, where Sinhala hegemonic forces are stepping into the breach created by the President’s mishandling of the security issue. If allowed to develop this ‘Sinhala resurgence’ will achieve for the Tigers what they and their proxies could not – a mini civil war along ethnic lines in the volatile East.

The East is indispensable; it is indispensable for both Sri Lanka and Tiger Eelam.

The preservation of one and the creation of the other depend to a considerable extent on who has the East. And within this indispensable East, no place is as coveted and as hotly contested as Trincomalee, the port city earmarked by Mr. Pirapaharan to be the capital of his future state.
