Douglas Devananda, leader of the EPDP, goes all out to back

Douglas Devananda, leader of the EPDP, goes all out to back Mahinda Rajapakse

Part 1. The case for supporting the presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse

In the following text Douglas Devananda, the leader of the Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party, presents his case for supporting the presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse. His decision is bound to divide the Tamil votes in the north. This will dash the hopes of Ranil Wickremesinghe, the opposition candidate, who is relying on the tacit support of the LTTE, to collect the bloc votes of the Tamils in the north.

In the last elections the LTTE was in a commanding position to deliver a solid bloc of votes to the Ranil Wickremesinghe. But with the weakening position of the LTTE in the north, as reported by the University Teachers for Human rights (Jaffna), Douglas Devananda should be in a better position to gather more votes for Mahinda Rajapakse.

Here is the first part of Douglas Devananda's appeal to the Tamil voters:

My fellow-countrymen,

Our kith and kin dispersed in the four corners of this earth,

My dear comrades whom I value more than my life,

For all of you, I offer my Vanakam.

What I wish to express here is not some words dressed up in high-flaunting language. My main purpose is to give voice to the voiceless and to those of our nation who have been beaten into submission and left to languish in despair because they have been deprived of their basic human rights.
