Colombo, 24 October, (Asiantribune.com): In a 37-point programme Douglas Devananda, the General-Secretary of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) has outlined the reasons for its decision to back Mahinda Rajapakse in the presidential race. He says that after several rounds of open talks with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, EPDP has come to the conclusion that he is the best option available to the Tamil-speaking people to resolve their problems non-violently and build a secure future to achieve their cherished goals of a federal constitution.

He has urged the Tamil-speaking people to vote for Mahinda Rajapakse without being "misled by empty and destructive emotions that would push future generations to dreaded military campaigns and bloodlettings.”

“In my assessment,” he added, “Mahinda Rajapakse alone is the most pragmatic presidential option available to the Tamil-speaking people. My humble appeal to you is to kindly vote for him. That is the only way we can guarantee security of life and a promising future for our people.”

Following are the 37 points put forward by Douglas Devananda MP:

1 The pragmatic political decision of the EPDP to support Mahinda Rajapakse.

2. Tamils have suffered untold hardships due to the internal strife in the past 25 years. This war has exhausted the Tamil-speaking people. They have reached a point where they have come to hate the war. The glamour of war has lost it appeal. The earlier fervor for violence has abated. They fervently yearn for a political solution to bring an end to war.
