Colombo, 20 February, (Asiantribune.com): In a bizarre turn of events, Eelam People’s Democratic Party led by Douglas Devananda has been elected unopposed to the Puthukudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabah, located right in the heart of the Tamil Tiger rebel stronghold in the Mullathievu district.
The Vavuniya District Returning Officer A.S. Karunanithy said in a notification dated 19 February that the EPDP was elected unopposed because only they had a valid list of nominees.
Karunanithy asked the Secretary of the EPDP to finalise the names of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and the members of the Sabha within seven days.
In the meantime, Douglas Devenanda, Secretary General of the EPDP and a cabinet minister in the Mahinda Rajapakse’s Government confirmed that he has received a facsimile message from the returning officer to provide names of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and the members for the Pradeshiya Sabah.
