[b]EU calls for early restoration of democracy in Burma and adequate relief to Kashmir quake victims [/b]

[b]New Delhi, 21 November, (Asiantribune.com):[/b] Calling for renewed efforts 'to bring about an early restoration of democracy in Burma, the European Parliament has advocated economic sanctions if necessary on the military junta. It also urged for adequate relief to the victims of October 8 earth quake on either side of Line of Control in Kashmir.

The EU made these calls in separate resolutions on human rights around the world adopted at the close of the Strasbourg session.

In its resolution on Burma, adopted by 74 votes in favor to 3 against with 2 abstentions, EU Parliament asked the Security Council to address the situation in Burma as a matter of urgency and to empower the Secretary-General to mediate 'to bring about national reconciliation and a transition to democracy'. It also told the Security Council to take the necessary measures to impose economic sanctions against Burma in an effort to force change.
