Ex-radical stands for Colombo mayor on ticket of Sri Lankan

Ex-radical stands for Colombo mayor on ticket of Sri Lankan ruling coalition

In upcoming local municipal elections in Sri Lanka, it is worth noting the candidacy of long-time, middle class radical Vasudeva Nanayakkara, leader of the Democratic Left Front (DLF), who is standing for the position of mayor of Colombo on the ticket of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). The UPFA—a coalition led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)—holds power nationally.

In the island's presidential elections last November, two other outfits previously associated with the DLF—the Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) and the United Socialist Party (USP)—ran nominally independent candidates. Nanayakkara, however, used his tawdry credentials as a "socialist" to unequivocally back the SLFP candidate, Mahinda Rajapakse.

No Sir.
Resisting occupied forces with gun.
Resisting political domination using violence and gun with gun.
Resisting colonization at gun point with gun.
Some how, VASU, what ever his former political views, he is amture politican. He will handle colombo properly
It seems you have given up on the professional politicians. How many ameture politicians are left in your country?

Tamils do not have, must not have any interest in Sri Lanka elections.
One of the forum member (I believe about a month ago) once stated that Sinhalese talk about Democracy because it gives majority to them and some Tamil parties talk about democracy because in the proportional representation system they can get at least one seat even if they get less votes than the rejected votes.

Thanks victorragunath. Very well put. Not only they can get one seat, It is also guranteed a ministry.
At least, YOU TWO SUPPORT POLITICAL GAINS WITH THE GUN.
This TALK IS ABOUT DESIRE TO DOMINATE AND CONTROL.

NO DEMOCRACY.

Within your life times, you understand more. I am sure, even at that time it will be DENIAL.

Some how, VASU, what ever his former political views, he is amture politican. He will handle colombo properly.

But, who we need for colombo is young blood with future vision.

ANY WAY, VASU is far better than Sirisena Cooray.

Nanda Wickremasinghe is a regular contributor to World Socialist Website. We also have seen his articles published in Asian Tribune. It is a treat to read his articles.

We, Tamils, still have some respect for Vasudeva. Mahinda knows that and he is also aware of Tamil's voting power in Colombo. It is a smart political decision by Mahinda to use Vasudeva to win Colombo.

It was a smart political decision by Srimavo to have Dr.N.M Perera, Colvin R De Silva, Peter Keneman etc.. on her side in 70s. Ironically, that was the period the Tamils finally decided to go for separation.

Tamils do not have, must not have any interest in Sri Lanka elections.

Democracy in Sri Lanka. They elect a dictator for 6 years. Then this elected dictator will fool people using media, forces, police, and so-called justice system to be re-elected. Basically they elect different dictators every 12 years.

Mr Nanda Wickremasinghe ,

Well written, though I am not much of a "Vasu" fan, can we also expect a through analysis of the other candidates who are contesting for the Mayor ship of CMC?

One area of interest would be the bio data of "the (dis?) Honourable Sirisena Cooray".... interesting!

Keep up the good work!
